Win7 tip: Minimize Skype to System Tray

In Windows 7 Skype is by default always present in your taskbar along with other active programs. Here is a simple guide on how to move it to system tray only.

Follow the steps below:

Open the Skype main window.

1. From the File menu select Tools (arrow 1 on the picture below), then click on Options (arrow 2 on the picture below).

2. Click the Advanced tab on the left (arrow 1) and finally uncheck (leave empty) the option “Keep Skype in the taskbar while I’m signed in” (arrow 2).

Skype will now only show in the system tray, and you will have more space in your taskbar for the other programs. If you change your mind, just go back to the step 2 and check the option again.

There are some guides that recommend you to start Skype with compatibility option to Windows XP. I strongly recommend that you don’t do this, because Skype will freeze when you call or video call someone.
